CHAPTER NINETEEN

Shannon rolled over after a few minutes and recovered her shirt from where it had landed on the floor. She glanced at the closed bathroom door and caught a few fragments of conversation, words like common and trail and once, her own name. Her face heated. Probably talking to Archer. She hoped Chase didn’t let on that she was there, half-dressed and recently panting under his touch.

She picked up the things that had fallen from her purse, including the small red journal of her grandmother’s. She stroked the faded cover and wondered what Chase would think when he saw it. After the way she’d treated him earlier, she wanted to give him something to make up for the way she’d acted. Something meaningful.

She laid the journal on the table beside the bed. A thick file folder sat next to the corded room phone, and as she moved it out of the way, a sheet of paper fell to the floor. She leaned over and picked it up.

I am caught between a life

I have not chosen and a life I want more than

anything in recent thought. Have I discovered the other part

of myself in a place I least expected? How do I breathe? How –

“I have something for you,” she said as he rejoined her on the bed.

He smiled and ran a finger along her bare arm. “I hope that means what I think it means.”

She handed him the journal. “I brought this for you.”

“What is it?”

“It’s one of Vivian Silverstone’s old journals, I think from when she was a student.”

His eyes widened. “Are you kidding? Really? Where did you get it?”

“In one of those old boxes,” she hedged. It wasn’t entirely a lie; she had found the journal tucked away inside an old box, just in her own home rather than the library.

He opened the cover. Inside, spidery script spelled out Vivian Blue. Her grandmother’s maiden name, her life before marriage, before Will. Chase flipped to the first page, and they saw a date almost sixty years in the past.

I met a guy today, handsome in the right ways but smart in the wrong ones. He loves Milton and Dickens and all the dead white men I hold in contempt...

To her utter surprise, tears filled Shannon’s eyes. The past flashed into the hotel room like a beam of light. The words sounded so like the grandmother she remembered, fire and independence and searing intelligence. The Granny Viv who set up
